...this twice-a-year ritual of calling, I have often failed to raise funds sufficient for much more than a snack. Often I would gripe to myself that they had given me the dregs from the list; realistically, I also attributed these dismal results to my own weak salesmanship. This time, things started no better. Of the first dozen classmates I called, not one answered the telephone. Where were all those likely donors when I wanted them? To have nothing to show after a half-hour's work further depressed my already low expectations...

...when his life starts crumbling, you can almost smell his comic flop sweat through the screen. Tom Schulman's script is smart about the media's ability to create celebrities--and the viewer's need to embrace them--until it goes soft-hearted and -headed by denouncing the very salesmanship that Hollywood and TV are built on. For an hour or so, though, the film has the gaudy assurance of a Ginsu knife infomercial...

When tourism hits a lull during the fall months, the American and European tourists who are there cannot walk a spleef's length without attracting some sort of attention from the locals. It is often hard to distinguish friendliness from salesmanship among Jamaicans, which can be off-putting--nearly every conversation leads to a proposition to buy somethings: hair braids, motor scooters, marijuana, mushroom tea, ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, or crack. ...fair that the Diva Divine makes albums only as vacations from movies and motherhood, for her genius is as a singer-entertainer. Midler's vocal voltage and pristine song salesmanship are on display here in tunes by Leonard Cohen, Chuckii Booker, Carole King, Ben Folds--lots of fine folk. Her voice can ache with hard-won wisdom (on the first single, My One True Friend) or smile with the sweet clarity of her Honolulu youth (Gus Kahn's 1925 Ukulele Lady). Songs like Laughing Matters, I'm Beautiful and I'm Hip give the album the sassy intimacy...

...Saturn conflict is a case study in GM's mounting woes. Perhaps the company's most notable success in the 1990s, the mid-priced, compact Saturns were sold with a revolutionary no-pressure style of salesmanship. Saturn has won high praise for winning consumers away from the likes of popular Toyota and Honda. Trouble is, corporate infighting over resources has prevented GM from upgrading Saturn's basic design or adding a new model since the station wagon was introduced in 1992. Worse yet, other GM divisions pump out small cars to compete with Saturn...
