Kara Jaye-Anne Otter, 12, had been on the antidepressant Paxil for seven months when she committed suicide. "I was told the worst side effects would be flulike symptoms," recalls her mother, Shannon Baker. "But after three weeks she had begun to cop an attitude. Her grades started falling. Then she didn't care what she looked like, and she was fighting with everybody." Baker says her daughter developed rashes and dark circles under her eyes and had trouble sleeping. Then, on June 7, 2001, Kara pinned a note to her chest reading, "By the time you find...

Doctors are more divided than ever over the safety of prescribing antidepressant drugs--Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft and other so-called selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)--to depressed children and teens. British health-care officials last month warned doctors against giving any SSRI but Prozac to kids, citing studies that suggest the drugs may trigger suicidal behavior. Why hasn't media raised this question? Congress or the FTC should look into the pricing policies of the big pharmas. Gopal Las Vegas...

...Suicide Risk I lost a daughter to suicide two years ago. She was on Paxil for 2 1/2 weeks before she died, and the medication greatly worsened her condition [Dec. 8]. Despite her disturbed and agitated state, no one dreamed she was suicidal; she had not shown any signs. She was a talented, beautiful young woman, a Stanford graduate working as an exhibit designer until the day before her death...

...TREATMENT FOR CERTAIN PEOPLE. Yes, your article raised concerns about the safety and propriety of putting young minds on psychotropic drugs, but it failed to show the dark side of the story-the possible suicide risk associated with taking these drugs. Warnings have been issued by the manufacturers of Paxil and Effexor about a risk of suicidal thinking in pediatric patients on these drugs, and the Food and Drug Administration is calling a hearing to review data. None of this comes too soon for those of us who believe these drugs can cause tragedy. Sara Bostock Atherton...
