Listening to a Brion-produced song is like entering a tastefully decorated drawing room. Brion--who plays piano, drums and guitar--often fills his music with warm instrumentation but never overwhelms a song's emotional content. In his own compositions, his lyrics are playfully pensive. Von Otter, the best of all possible mezzo-sopranos, has put together a kaleidoscopically varied program of pop, jazz, classical and folk songs accompanied by an equally diverse instrumental ensemble (accordion, marimba, guitar, synthesizers, a brass quintet--you name it, she's got it). Every number, be it Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, O Come, All Ye Faithful or Benjamin Britten's Corpus Christi Carol, is sung with stylish grace and disarming sincerity. ...Raine Maida achieved neither the dreamy falsetto of Radiohead's Thom Yorke nor the endearing whininess of Smashing Pumpkin's Billy Corgan, but instead settled for a lesser euphony in between. Unlike tours associated with their previous albums Naveed and Clumsy, Maida spent much of the set without a guitar in his hands. Instead, he stumbled around the stage with a placid stare of indifference temporarily disturbed from time to time by unconvincing posture. New keyboardist Jamie Edwards followed Maida's scales precisely on the Moog in a valiant, yet ultimately futile, attempt to hide all of the notes that...
...around heel, who somehow comes off as a nice guy despite himself. The running joke of the movie is that Emmet Ray is the second greatest jazz guitarist of his time, and the two times that Emmet has encountered number one, the real-life figure Django Reinhardt (this Gypsy guitar player from France), he fainted on sight. Penn handles the movies many slapstick moments with gusto, including a terrific scene in which Emmet crashes through the roof of a counterfeiting operation in an attempt to escape a third meeting with Django. These moments of light comedy are also nicely tempered...
