Subsequent events followed a now familiar script. In Bilbao, another Basque city, the West German consul received a postcard from Beihl identifying the kidnapers as members of the E.T.A.-for Euskadi at Askatu-sana ("Basque Land and Liberty"). A minuscule but tautly organized terrorist group, E.T.A. has been skirmishing with General Francisco Franco's regime for years. Beihl's future, it was made clear, would depend on the fate of 16 E.T.A. guerrillas who went on trial last week in Burgos for the 1968 murder of a San Sebastián police chief and other terrorist activities...

...James Willwerth cabled that he was personally convinced that there had been no security leak on the abortive Son Tay raid: "Most military and intelligence people in Saigon simply weren't given the details of the air strikes or the commando raid. They hadn't seen the script." In Washington, Correspondent William Mader, who has followed the plight of the prisoners all along, talked with concerned Government officials and with the wives of the men. "What impressed me most was the immense quiet courage and fortitude of the wives," he says. Adds Keith Johnson, who wrote the story...

Ronald Neame's direction plods along like your fat Uncle Harry in a snow drift, and includes such boggling episodes as Scrooge's descent into Hell (which looks to have been inspired by the astronauts' descent toward Jupiter in 2001). The script, music and lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse, whose previous contributions include Dr. Dolittle and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. After this fiasco, Bricusse should become as forgettable as the music he writes. The chorus of one of his tunes from Scrooge runs something like "Thank you very much, thank you very much. Thank you very, very, very...

...fact, it is as meticulously planned as a semester at medical school. From Palmer's research department, program subjects flow to the production office, then get channeled to Head Writer Jeff Moss, a veteran of the Captain Kangaroo show. Three weeks before taping, Moss and his writers develop a script. Theoretically, their ideal viewer is poor and culturally deprived. Actually, the show catches the preschooler almost before his society does. Thus Sesame Street is as popular with the well-to-do as it is with the slum dweller. The kids may spark to the astonishing variety of material...

...Shaughnessy, the weak-shanked schoolteacher. There is Trevor Howard, who makes the crustaceous Father Collins genuinely likable and credible against almost insuperable odds. In the role of Ryan's daughter Rosy, Sarah Miles is as tremulously lovely a colleen as ever graced a Kerry hillside. The elliptic, listless script is by Robert Bolt, her real-life husband, who has to his credit the literate A Man for All Seasons. Bolt and Lean did not lack time or money; the film was three years in the making, cost more than $10 million...
