The one in theaters today, directed by Eric Brevig and written by Michael Weiss, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin, sticks pretty closely to the plot: Professor Trevor Anderson (Fraser) finds a runic inscription of an underground route inside a volcano and, with his nephew Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and an Icelandic guide (Anna Briem), locates an underworld Eden and all manner of exotic animals. And, just as in the Verne, they end up in Sicily...
...rich, Corinthian leather; he is still lithe on his feet and can deliver a wisecrack as sharp as a whip crack. Indeed, he seems sprightlier than much of the movie. There are scenes that play like stretching exercises at the retirement home; there are garrulous passages while Indy translates runic inscriptions; even the title seems a few words too long. It takes about an hour for Crystal Skull to deliver on its promise of chic, robust, familiar entertainment...
...hundreds of lives and add exactly nothing to the lore of civilization. (And, in three of the four movies, he comes home empty-handed.) But heck, it's an adventure movie; leave all ethnic scruples home. Scholars of antiquity will be pleased to know that Crystal Skull - with its runic inscriptions, vanished languages, hidden caves and dreadful secrets - is the archaeolog-iest Indy film yet. In fact, the movie is a little plot-heavy around the middle. It seems more determined to tell a complicated story than to use a story as the excuse for a convulsive, nonstop thrill ride...
