...Kent resented the increasing power of Sam Katz (cofounder of famed Balaban & Katz theatre chain) in the company; 2) Mr. Kent had quarreled with Taximan John Daniel Hertz, leader of Paramount's new management. Every producer was said to be angling for Mr. Kent last week, with RKO, now 60%-owned by Radio Corp., thought to be an especially eager dickerer. ...Woman Commands (RKO-Pathe). Apollonia Chalupez (Pola Negri) has a warm soft voice and an accent which, although she is a Polish gypsy, makes her sound almost exactly like Greta Garbo. This curious little picture?a combination of comedy, romance, mid-European melodramatics, court intrigue and fictionized history?does not suit her so well as the vampire parts she used to play in silent films but it has a few amusing sequences. While Singer Smith is at Keith's Theatre in Washington next week, RKO will pay line charges for her radio program, for La Palina Cigars, to the Columbia Broadcasting System, rival to RKO's National Broadcasting...

It is about a Mexican millionaire (Leo Carrillo) who, to facilitate his abduction of a cabaret girl (Dolores Del Rio) has her sweetheart (Norman Foster) jailed and removed from the country. All this is done with a superfluity of Mexican accent by Carrillo and Del Rio, and reiterations of clean young Americanisms by Foster, who encourages Del Rio by saying "Be game, kid." In the play these exaggerations made...
