...recalls, like the massive one on Sunday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) involving 143 million lbs. of raw and frozen beef. Currently, IdentiGEN is operating in Europe, where the mad cow crisis in the mid-'90s led to the establishment of a comprehensive system of traceability. All pork and beef products sold at the U.K.-based, worldwide megamarket TESCO, for example, have been logged by IdentiGEN and stamped with the IdentiGEN DNA TraceBack seal of approval, as are 75% of beef and pork products sold in Ireland - the seal proves that the meat originated where the supplier says...
...Pakistani political system is based on an elected official's ability to deliver locally. "You will never see a candidate offer a five-point plan to solve the flour crisis because it's not really what the voter cares about," says a Western official, who calls politicking in Pakistan "pork-barrel politics to the nth degree." The whole system is built around largesse, favors and influence peddling, he says. Instead, politicians prefer to buy flour themselves and distribute it amongst the poor - a better way to earn personal loyalty and guarantee votes the next time around...
...congressional turf, and a laudable one; the jetties would have ravaged the Outer Banks at a cost of more than $500,000 per boat. In fact, Bush's Office of Management and Budget has consistently proposed zero funding for the agency's most environmentally disastrous and economically ludicrous pork - the Yazoo pump, a $300 million irrigation project for a few Arkansas rice farmers, a $300 million deepening of the Delaware River that was exposed as a boondoggle by the Government Accountability Office, an unnecessary $750 million navigation just a stone's throw from the flimsy Corps floodwalls that drowned...
...Army Corps makework has become a kind of inside-the-Beltway joke; when I first interviewed Lott's spokesman about the Yazoo pump, he mock-squealed: "Oh, no! You can't tell people about all this pork for Mississippi! Not in an election year! Please, don't throw us into that briar patch!" But it's all seemed less funny since Hurricane Katrina, when Corps failures ruined a great American city. The Corps was wasting money and destroying wetlands with mockeries like the Yazoo pump when it should have been building decent levees and restoring the wetlands that used...
Strangely, though, the assembly-line system didn't actually save me time, compared with cooking dinner myself. The entrées don't come with sides, just suggestions for them, so I found myself chopping bacon, shallots and garlic for Brussels sprouts while stirring the pulled pork--a dish that usually takes me five minutes to prep from scratch and comes out much better...
