...really liked it. I liked the abstract art, the 12-tone music, the absurdist theater, the austere furniture, the Manichaean bipolar geopolitics. And so, given my longing for an irretrievable past, I think insularity and exile are the ambient notes to strive for this year, as opposed to your mindless, self-annulling, Leni Riefenstahl-style euphoria. Dwayne comes to believe that he is a character in one of Kilgore's novels, and this realization sparks a series of violent outbursts. ...Waiting to go on at the hotel, in an oak-paneled room equipped with bar and pool table, the Kroks relax and practice some of their music. Without soloist, they revealed the bare and mindless ba-ba ba-ba's that are the backbone ("block" is the official term) of college a capella. One wonders how even the thrill of the bar (it was nice, to be sure), the gratis filet mignon and the reliable applause could keep them singing this stuff for a dozen hours every week.
