...inadequacy and self-doubt that dominate most of Hesse's characters are also factors in his attitude toward his writing itself. One of the most explicit examples is a later story called "Dream Journeys." Here he describes the frustrations of a popular writer attempting to become a 'true poet,' a type he describes passingly well in another story, "Chagrin D'Amour." The poor writer is inspired by a dream, but cannot satisfactorily write it out as he thinks a 'true poet' would. Instead he resolves "that he must content himself with being a true poet, a dreamer, a seer, only...

Like many advocates of censorship, Jeffrey Bell seems to worry only about how works of art depicting violence and "explicit sex" will corrupt other people not how they will corrupt him. He can presumably take care of himself, and so he can admire Rosemary's Baby as art without any adverse consequences to his state of mind. But he favors the "total suppression" of that movie because he believes that it has contributed to "the cult of Satanism." Apparently he wants to protect other people, less mature than himself, from their own impulses. His insulting paternalism is evident throughout...

...Valenta can be sure of his guests' marital status, he cannot say, but in deference to their sensibilities, both motels feature only "softcore" movies that are less explicit than the fleshy dramas projected in skin-flick houses (sample titles: Peeping Melvin, Lusting for Life). For most registrants, soft-core seems quite sufficient...

Clearly chosen by the district attorney as a test case, Deep Throat has explicit sex scenes that differ little from those in dozens of other hard-core porno films. It is unusual only in its unexpected popularity. The film has grossed an estimated $1,000,000 at the World since it opened last June, and another $4,000,000 in 70 other theaters across the country, making it the most successful pornographic film ever shown. In the World's case, however, success may possibly backfire; New York's obscenity law allows a fine...

...time for conservatives to admit that when it comes to the explicit depiction of violence, liberals have a point. As Sam Peckinpah's films have shown, it is today possible for the first time to make artistic violence look real--and exciting. As Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange has shown, violence can also be made to look beautiful--and attractive. Films like these, precisely because they have artistic merit, raise disturbing new questions about the tolerance of society for such things, assuming as seems likely that they represent a major trend...
