...long ago, the most technically gifted of living directors was interviewed upon the appearance of his newest film, Frenzy, which contains a scene of explicit sexual murder that could not have appeared in a general-release film as recently as five years ago. Were you uncomfortable, Alfred Hitchcock was asked, when you read of the young man some years back who, after seeing Psycho, assaulted and fatally stabbed a young woman who was in the process of taking a shower...

Among those who advocate censorship, conservatives tend to favor suppression of explicit sex, while liberals tend to deplore explicit violence. In artistic terms, which admittedly in my view are not really relevant, conservatives have much the better argument. The depiction of violence, especially in verse and on stage, is an integral part of much great art from Homer to the present. Explicit sex, while depicted by many great writers, has not been comparably important, at least to the art of the West. ...conflict. Albert Rosenthal, law professor at Columbia University, cites the one he considers most applicable: the concurring opinion of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson in the 1952 steel-seizure case. Jackson maintained that the President is on strongest constitutional ground when his action is consistent with the explicit direction of a congressional statute; he has less authority when he takes action in an area where Congress has not made known its wishes; he is weakest of all when he acts in opposition to a congressional statute. By impounding so liberally, Nixon obviously falls into Category...

...shooting the film, Bertolucci committed himself from the outset to being totally explicit. "I decided that to suggest and allude instead of saying it outright would create an unhealthy climate for the spectator," he explains. For greater realism, he insisted on using an actual apartment rather than a set for the scenes between Paul and Jeanne, although he then chose very unrealistic colors and lighting to heighten the atmosphere. He required that the decor be in reds, oranges and flesh tones-"all uterine," in the words of Tango Set Designer Maria Paola Maino. The light that slanted into the rooms...

...Explicit in its sex scenes, it is nevertheless tame compared with many other dirty movies. Yet, according to the distributors, it has grossed almost $3,000,000 in over 60 U.S. theaters-the biggest take of any hard-core porno movie to date. This is partly because women-both alone and with dates-have been lining up to see it. Many find it revolting, but some seem drawn to freckled Linda Lovelace, the female Don Juan who is also funny: a Mad magazine cloning of Little Annie Fanny and Mary Marvel. The Texas actress who plays the role, however, seems...
