Similarly needless cruelty could have been prevented by a second bill, the Latino and Immigrant Fairness Act, which would have corrected bureaucratic mistakes by the Immigration and Naturalization Service that denied legal status to many immigrants granted amnesty by Congress. Although these individuals have lived in the country for decades, they could be deported at any time simply because the INS erred in processing their applications. The bill would also have allowed immigrants changing their legal status to pay a $1,000 fee and remain in the country while applying, rather than have to leave the U.S. and reapply...
Beyond immigration, other issues of fairness still remain untouched, such as hiring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Although a bill to end such discrimination was introduced more than a year ago and contains exemptions (for instance, for religious entities) designed to ease its passage, it has not received so much as a committee hearing. Similarly, a hate-crimes measure recently struck from the Defense Department appropriations bill by Senate Republicans would have added sexual orientation to the list of protected categories. Even philosophical opponents of hate-crimes laws must recognize that nothing is gained by arbitrarily excluding certain...
Paying it forward isn't so easy for most of us. Leder says she's still looking for her life-changing good deed--although good box office for Pay It Forward would be a start. "I hope this movie makes the world a better place. I hope it starts a human chain of goodness and kindness," she says. "We sure need a good dose of it." And--this is something parents, teachers and Congressmen can agree on--so does Hollywood...
Doctors have long been aware that daily treatment with inhaled steroids is critical to saving the lives of patients with severe asthma--both children and adults. Although the drugs cannot stop an asthma attack that has already started (different medications are needed for that), inhaled steroids are very good at counteracting the chronic inflammation that predisposes the lungs to asthma attacks in the first place. Until now, however, many physicians have hesitated to use inhaled steroids to treat milder cases of asthma in children. The drugs have side effects--most notably an apparent slowing of bone growth--that make them...
Leon Jaroff's opinion piece attacking the antivaccine movement [SKEPTICAL EYE, Oct. 2] does a tremendous disservice to thinking parents everywhere. I am concerned enough to educate myself about vaccines and intelligent enough to realize that although there are benefits from immunizations, there are most definitely significant risks as well. Parents are the ones who are ultimately responsible for their child's welfare. They have a right to choose whether or not a potentially dangerous substance is injected into their child. LAURA W.
