Punk-ska lives! Although their sound was threatened with being lost in the doom, gloom and anger of alternative-rock, the Chicago band Mest scored a summer hit with "What's the Dillio?" However, the catchiness of the song also brought about a significant backlash, as the mantra of "What's the Dillio?" constantly spilling from the radio made the band seem inane and ultimately very lame...
...style echoes the fact that Rapp wrote Nocturne when he was reading Faulkner. Although the Son never lapses into an inchoate stream, his monologue is a form of self-flagellation reminiscent of The Sound and the Fury's Jason Compson. In Nocturne the monologue is lyrical, moving with the sheer inevitability of a musical composition. Dallas Roberts' Son makes each word into a plaintive wail. And while the council has not been a shining example of representative government, it has reformed itself through down-sizing which resulted in more competitive elections this fall. An apathetic student body--voter turnout in the fall elections was predictably low--should not be allowed to slowly strangle the council out of existence by constricting its coffers...
...weekend, take a break from studying or tear yourself away from the Grille to see The Insanity of Mary Girard. I saw the show last weekend at a rehearsal, with no sets, no costumes and before any of the final runs had taken place and still I enjoyed it, although enjoyed may not be quite the word to use for a play that is so disturbing...
