...this gulf - between the way America perceives itself and the way it is perceived even by ostensibly moderate Muslim opinion - the result of a marketing failure? In a word, no. There's only so much an ad campaign can do. Beers told an interviewer after accepting the account that her job was "to deliver the intangible assets of the United States, things like our belief system and our values." But the Muslim world's hostility is based, in the first instance, less on America's values than on perceptions of its policies. There's no question that conservative Muslim fundamentalists...

...point I had hoped to get across in my comments regarding the proposed changes to the Administrative Board policy on sexual assault is that, as it stands, the Ad Board is often a highly misleading option for survivors who wish to press charges against their assailants within the confines of the University. The Ad Board process seems, at first glance, to be a shorter and less painful option, avoiding the stigma of going to the police or the intensive, intimidating and difficult process of navigating the court system. Rather than simply removing one of a survivor’s options, Harvard needs to redouble its efforts to make sure its policies and resources do as much as possible to support the survivor on his or her own path to recovery and healing. As one of the top universities in the country, Harvard has a responsibility to lead by example and create model sexual assault policy, education, and resources that...

...strong and formal commitment to ethnic studies. It is unfair that students currently interested in ethnic studies have no tutorials to learn its methodology, no coordinated advising, no set curriculum and a limited selection of disconnected courses. To address these problems, several principal changes must be made. The ad-hoc Committee on Ethnic Studies should be elevated to a standing committee. A Latino and Latin American Studies, Native-American studies and an Asian-American studies department should each be created. And the University should develop greater curricular diversity in areas studies, which concentrate on regions outside the U.S. For example...
