...Singing Fool Jolson is Al Stone, a singing waiter at an inferior nightclub, who is daft over a revue-girl (Josephine Dunn). He writes a song, sings it to the revue-girl, is heard by one Marcus (Edward Martindel), a theatrical shogun. Shogun Marcus, impressed, wants Al to write more songs, gives Molly, the revue-girl, a break. Four years later Al & Molly are Broadway pets, but Al loses Molly, who becomes infatuated with John Perry (Reed Howes). There is a three-year-old child called Sonny Boy (David Lee), who escapes artificiality so completely that a hypersensitive cinemaddict feels...
Lovers (Ramon Novarro, Alice Terry). Spanish diplomat Don Julian (Edward Martindel) lives in domestic placidity with his young wife, Teodora (Alice Terry), and his ward, Ernesto (Ramon Novarro). Busy-buzzing gossips circulate malicious lies about an affair between the young wife and the young ward. Duels result. Don Julian is run through. Ernesto avenges his death, sails far away with the maligned Teodora, to lands less suspicious. It is all simple, well-acted, not particularly engrossing...
Mention must be made, however, of the unusually good singing in the opera. Mr. Martindel repeats the success he made in "Naughty Marietta"; the other soloists, though inferior to him, are decidedly above the usual musical comedy level...
