Pergamon was the subject of Dr. Tarbell's lecture delivered in the Jefferson Physical Laboratory last evening. The city of Pergamon, said Dr. Tarbell, was situated near the seacoast in Mysia on a hill between two rivers which flow into the Aegean Sea. It was of no importance before the time of Alexander the Great. After the death of Alexander the city was chosen as a place of deposit for treasure by Attalus who founded a dynasty in 241 B. C. which lasted for several hundred years. The princes of this dynasty distinguished themselves by their energy...
...solid sweep right home on to the chest, the outside hand of elbow being swung past the side and the shoulders rowed back. The pressure is not relaxed for a moment since the finish is the most important part of the whole stroke. For a good solid finish flow a steady swing, a firm beginning and a hard stroke. The slide is distributed throughout the stroke, not wasted in one short snappy shove...
...would be far more advisable to send agents to Europe to solicit immigration, so as to enable this country to compete with South American states in their inducements to immigrants. The question arises; How can the natural resources, great as they are, be employed, if we restrict a steady flow of men from Europe, who have done so much towards discovering these resources...
...fire to the buildings it enters. A current taken from the electric railway system would have the same objections. Another danger from any system with uninsulated wires which run near others is that storms often bring the different wires into contact, and thus currents of great intensity may flow into channels not intended for them. Several recent accidents have been due to this cause, such as the killing of a horse in Cambridge, and the simultaneous burning of four or five houses in Somerville...
...light to electricity and magnetism is being worked up by Mr. D. W. Shea. The apparatus is arranged in such a manner as to investigate whether light is a manifestation of electricity or not. Professor B. O. Peirce and Dr. Wilson are trying to determine the rate of flow of electricity into large reservoirs, for instance, into cables; in this investigation the greatest accuracy is necessary, as extremely small fractional parts come into play. Professor J. Trowbridge and Dr. S. Sheldon are at work on Electro motive forces, while Professor J. Trowbridge and Mr. Sabine propose to study the surface...
