Even human disasters are transfigured into something inhumanly beautiful. The adulterous executive leaves his windowless bedroom to seek aid, and enters his duplex office to find it on fire--huge velveteen curtains, bargello chairs, plush carpeting. His clothing catches fire as well. We lose sight of the human perspective as the director shifts into slow motion and we watch only a vaguely human figure on fire stagger through a room, framed by flames as floor, ceiling and walls burn.
