...mankind, suggesting the solution of the tremendous issues of the twentieth century and at the same time delicately alluding to the great and successful United States of the New World. It is undeniable that the chief republic of North America has solved, with reasonable success, the problem of reconciling vast areas and immense populations with a comparatively simple and understandable federal system. It is equally undeniable that since the fall of the Roman Empire nearly fifteen centuries ago the rich Continent of Europe, including the fountains of Western culture and Western government, has been broken up into warring units. ...scholar rather than the student. The former hardly needs a guide. But with so large a proportion of the finest modern authors using the drama and the novel as a medium, a little emphasis on the more human side of current literature would be of greater benefit to the vast majority of Harvard men than the scheme which the committee has evolved...
...Bridge, the Manhattan Victory Arch, the interior of the Metropolitan Opera House. He did not approve the theory of Manhattan skyscrapers, but he redesigned the Ritz Tower, smart apartment hotel. Last week preparatory labors were almost done. Preparations consisted of building at Akron the largest airship factory and dock in the world. Its floor is a vast concrete spread of 364,000 square feet (more than 8 acres), the largest single uninterrupted floor area yet built. Over this is the dock structure, a cavernous semi-paraboloid building 211 ft. high, 1,175 ft. long. From the high perspective of a flying machine it looks like a peanut or silkworm cocoon. Although the dock was not entirely covered last week, 40,000 people could congregate under the finished portion to watch...
