Usage:

General Viljoen rose during the late war, from the position of commandant of the Witwatersrand goldfields, to the position of assistant commandant-general of the Transval forces, second in command to General Botha. He played a prominent part in the battles of Colenso, Spion Kop and Vaalkrantz, besides being on active campaigning duty at other times.
