Feis entered the State Department in 1931 as an economist, but his masterwork was a ten-volume history of American foreign policy from 1933 to the 1950s. Though some younger historians questioned the objectivity of a man so close to his topic, Feis' books were widely praised for their richness of detail and incisive presentation.
