For the past three weeks it has claimed second place behind leader Star Trek III, which sells for $29.95. So successful has the debut been that the tape's producer, MGM/UA Home Video, expects sales to reach $27 million by the end of the year...
...Stock manipulation. Veliotis has given the Justice Department a 1977 tape of a talk he had with MacDonald. In it, MacDonald told Veliotis that the company had decided to issue an overly optimistic delivery timetable for the + first Trident submarine because Lewis wanted "to keep our stock price from sliding." The sub was eventually finished in 1981, two years behind the original schedule...
Before the indictment was returned, Veliotis left for Greece, stopping only to pack corporate documents and tape recordings of business conversations from his years as a General Dynamics executive. Most of the records have now been turned over to the Justice Department. Veliotis denies offering them to federal prosecutors in exchange for dropping the kickback charges, but no doubt he hopes his cooperation will improve chances for a future bargain.
