Looking over old syllabi, I find readings I wish I had done, classes I wish I had gone to, professors I wish I had gotten to know. A part of me thinks, “Well, if these things really were important to me, I would have done them! Priorities are revealed in actions.” But I would be hard pressed to argue that watching the same episode of Family Guy three times was more important or a better use of my time than going to a molecular and cellular biology lecture. ...waste of teachers’ time and ours—except unlike shopping week, at least it doesn’t actually harm us in the process. Shopping period may once have been useful, it’s true—back in the days before syllabi could be posted online or that questioner could e-mail the professor instead. But today, much more information beyond a one-paragraph course description can and must be made available several months before a semester begins. We should take advantage of that—and abolish the shopping period that it has made...

Therefore, we encourage undergraduates to talk to friends, look at online syllabi, and think seriously about their schedules before they pre-register.
