...production throughout second semester, HRST put together an artistically and financially successful season. While Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and La Mancha were widely enjoyed, they closely resembled much of the term-time student work that makes its way into the Loeb Experimental Theatre. The one standout of the season was Stoppard's spy thriller Hapgood. Directed by Nick Parillo '00, Hapgood was a delightfully exhilarating glimpse into the self-aware world of Cold War intelligence. Slickly stylized from the opening montage to the final showdown, this vibrant production possessed the capability of overshadowing the many fine performances; no doubt...
...Francisco Opera specializes in movie-into-opera custom conversion jobs designed to tantalize non-operagoers who don't know Rigoletto from rigatoni. Two years ago, it was A Streetcar Named Desire, with superstar soprano Renee Fleming as Blanche Dubois; now it's Dead Man Walking, with superstar mezzo Susan Graham as Sister Helen Prejean, the spiritual adviser who brings salvation to a death-row inmate, the role for which Susan Sarandon won an Academy Award. The score is by Jake Heggie, a gifted purveyor of bittersweet art songs, and the libretto is by playwright-opera buff Terrence McNally (The Lisbon...

If not, this production is a respectable introduction to Williams text for those unfamiliar with the play, and a chance for others to revisit a memory or two. In either case, HRSTs Streetcar provides an unknowing example of the difference between the truth and, as Blanche puts...
Maybe it was natural to try to market it, turn the 1872 customhouse into a museum, get a big grant to repave the center of town with cobblestones and fake streetcar lines, peddle the old glory days of the big river town and hope no one asks how it died. There is lots of history here, all fascinating but not pretty. So some residents aren't sure that the buses will ever come rolling in or the hotels ever reopen. "You ask the average person on the street what Cairo needs," says Mayor James Wilson, "and they...
