...RICHARD STRAUSS: THE LIFE OF A NON-HERO, by George R. Marek. The great romantic composer is viewed amidst a vivid evocation of cultural life in Germany -whose decay and upheaval after World War I, argues the author, was the primary cause of Strauss's disappointing later output...
...rest of the program was more conventional--some Tompkins and Morley, sounding boxy and if it needed a chorus one quarter the size of the tour group, some incongrously Western-sounding "Asian" songs, and choruses from La Reine Indigo, by Johann Strauss, Jr. The saving grace of these choruses were some absurdly ornate soprano solos, masterfully executed by Carlotta Wilsen. Like the other successful pieces on the program, the Strauss was impressive primarily for its animation and coherence; when Asian Tour 1967 achieves these qualities more consistently it will be a fine performing group...

On the Liberty Memorial Mall, an old-fashioned fireworks display climaxed a promenade concert of orchestral chestnuts (Suppé's Poet and Peasant Overture, Strauss's Blue Danube). All over town last week-from century-old French costumes and sketches at the public library to art nouveau table settings at Halls department store-the style was redolent of the era of the potted palm...

As a whole, the eleven Christian Democrat ministers and nine Socialists have pretty well buried ideological differences in favor of a get-it-done approach...
Lashing out at VW's proud heritage, Strauss concluded: "A great name is no longer enough. The needs of car buyers have grown." The Minister is a kind of case in point. Despite a vigorous attack on his own weighty problems, Strauss still tips the scales at 205 lbs. and fits better into his own BMW four-door sedan than into a beetle...
