This guy Ernie (as many a conversation in Hollywood steam rooms and Gibson shops made clear last week) was just an ordinary guy from Connecticut 15 years ago, serving a long hitch in the Navy. One day he was laid up in the hospital in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and right away he fell in love with his nurse. Girl by the name of Rhoda. Kind of fat girl, but nice, and it figured: he was fat; she was fat; they were happy...

...well as of the mysterious currents that flow there will decide the future's underwater wars. Though the seas cover 70% of the earth's surface, oceanographers have carefully mapped only about a third of the world's ocean floor. The Russians have gone full steam on oceanography, have built the world's biggest fleet of floating oceanographic laboratories-14 large vessels v. the U.S.'s half-dozen*-and have explored much of the floor of the Arctic Ocean...

Business statistics provided some hindsight last week on just when the economy started to turn around and how fast it is recovering. The recession lost most of its steam during 1958's second quarter. With most of the steam gone from some of their liveliest stumping topics, they began heading back to the course steered all along by Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson: booming the "responsible" Democratic Party, which has proved that it can work constructively with a Republican President. That was the same strategy that returned Democratic majorities...

Last week the era of such small plants began, as the 210-ton Argonne Low Power Reactor went critical, i.e., began a controlled chain reaction, at the Atomic Energy Commission testing grounds in Idaho Falls. The Argonne reactor is a natural-circulation boiling water reactor: it produces steam simply and directly in its core instead of in a separate heat exchanger leading to the turbogenerator, and has an air-cooled condenser that drastically cuts down the total water needed. Full capacity: 3,000 thermal kw. -enough to light 260 average homes or (if used as radiator steam) to heat...
