In the autumn of 1847 he went to Germany to study Philogy, and he worked there steadily four years at different universities, chiefly at Gottingen, where he took the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1851. His doctor's dissertation, entitled "Smyrnaeorum Resgestae et Antiquitates," gained the rare compliment from one of his most distinguished teachers, Karl Friedrich Hermann of Gottingen, of being mentioned in his work on Greek Antiquities, in which these words still stand in the fifth edition: "Welche fleissige Arbeit alle sonstige Nachweisungen uber diese Stadt (Smyrna) unnothig macht."
