...promotion she deserves or the man she wants. The reason for both of these frustrations is one and the same, and seemingly beyond her powers of control: her boss won't promote her unless she's tied down, financially and maritally, for fear she might abandon ship. And the man of her choice, fellow advertiser Sam (Kevin Bacon), only goes for forbidden fruit--women who are already spoken...

...Shelton has not shied away from tactics that implicitly criticize Pentagon routine. While many Chairmen have been tankers, pilots and ship drivers--and were eager to embrace whatever new weapon came along--Shelton, as commander of the famed 82nd Airborne in 1993, raised eyebrows by scrapping the division's fleet of high-powered AH-64 Apache helicopter gunships in favor of more reliable but modest OH-58 Kiowas. Shelton's career went into high gear in Haiti in 1994, when he cut short the U.S. invasion, turned back the bombers and transformed himself from warrior to a diplomat, ousting Raoul...

When astronaut Michael Foale joined two cosmonauts aboard the Russian space station Mir in May, he expected to spend most of his time carrying out scientific experiments. It hasn't quite worked out that way. On June 25 an out-of-control supply ship slammed into Mir, knocking out power, ruining many of Foale's experiments and making the three spacefarers scramble to perform emergency repairs. Then, early last week, Russian commander Vasily Tsibliyev announced he was having heart problems. He couldn't perform the more extensive repairs the ship needed, and if NASA was willing, the Russian space agency...

...more like it. Like the Mir spacecraft itself, Tsibliyev is worn down and in danger of falling apart. He has been aboard the aging space station since February and has had to cope with nonstop crises: a fire, breakdowns in oxygen and cooling systems, a collision with a cargo ship and last week a power failure. No wonder he's suffering from an irregular heartbeat and taking sedatives...

...make things worse, the Russian media have been pointing fingers at him as the cause of some of the accidents, and one of his bosses has labeled him a chronic complainer. Tsibliyev was guiding the cargo ship on June 25, when it bashed into the station's Spektr module, and some Russian commentators say he may have created the problem by entering the wrong numbers into a computer. At one point last week, ABC News reported that it was Tsibliyev who yanked the wrong plug and cut off the station's power. Mir flight director Vladimir Solovyov would...
