Recent efforts by social conservatives to amend the Constitution to prohibit gay marriage are deplorable and discriminatory. Such an amendment would undermine the fundamental notions of equality and freedom on which our country was founded and would mark a significant setback in the progress that gay people—and other traditionally oppressed groups—have made toward equality.
