...world in which the bizarre, the senseless and the cruel soon become commonplace, no one-outside the inhabitants themselves-paid much attention last week to Kukang. Three months ago it was a thriving coastal village. Its farmers and fishermen prospered from land and sea. And then the Communist artillery attack began, and the villagers hastily dug shelters in the ground...
...students and workers were whipped into a synthetic fenzy of rage at "U.S. invasion" of Quemoy and the other offshore islands (TIME. Sept. 22). Scarcely had these demonstrations reached the proper pitch of hysteria when Peking did an about-face, proclaimed first a cease-fire and then its present senseless policy of shelling Quemoy only on alternate days, as if to show that if Red China could not take the islands, it could kill innocent people on them at will. Mexico City's bus owners counted the damage from senseless student riots (TIME, Sept. 8) and stated their position: "The metropolitan bus industry is now bankrupt." Son Melvin Dean, 8, told police that he was awakened and choked in the night by a white-masked prowler. The child cried for his parents, who came running. Before both died of knife wounds, Loujean Nimer is reported to have told police that the prowler was "tall as my husband, same build" (5 ft. 7 in., 160 Ibs.). In the public shock that followed, nobody got more sympathy than...
...that virtually every distilling stock has risen since Congress acted, many to new highs. (Schenley's rose the most, from 18½ earlier this year to 31½.) Distress selling of whisky to collect the tax is now over, said Rosenstiel, and there is no reason for "senseless" price wars...
