...voluntary services in large numbers. These expectations, however, have not been realized. A large majority of the students never attend any services. This appalling state of affairs is one of the principal facts upon which outsiders base their judgment that Harvard men are non-religious. But, though this may seem to the casual observer the natural conclusion, we think that the true explanation of most of the absences from chapel is carelessness and unwillingness to sacrifice a few minutes. Many men have never taken the trouble to go inside the Chapel. It is not because they are atheists and devoid...
...have been chosen earlier, kept more distinct from the second eleven, and drilled for a longer time in team work. The evenness with which many of the candidates were matched and the many injuries to prominent players made the choice of a first eleven difficult; and while it does seem as if it would be better to choose a first eleven earlier and to give them constant care and training as a team, even at the expense of a possible minor mistake in the first choice, yet this question can also best be left to the trainers...
Since the first game with 1900, the Sophomores have improved immensely, and yesterday they played a hard, clean game. The Freshmen, on the other hand, do not seem to be playing any better football than they were last week, and unless they improve rapidly from now on they will have little chance against the Pennsylvania freshmen...
...weights of the men now playing on the first eleven are: Cabot 172, Mills 181, Bouve 203, Doucette 220, N. Shaw 205, Lee 168, Moulton 172, Beale 157, Sullivan, 160, Dunlop 163, Brown 160. All of these seem to have recovered from the effects of the Carlisle game except Norton Shaw, whose knee still troubles him a little. It is barely possible, but hardly probable, that Wheeler will be able to play in the Princeton game. Donald may get around into shape for the Pennsylvania game. However, if Brewer and Cabot are on the ends they should strengthen the tackles...
...showed up very well, chiefly on account of the lack of heavy men for the centre positions. The line has recently been strengthened by the addition of Holmes, who played tackle on the Freshman team that defeated Yale. It is still weak, however, and the men do not seem to be able to hold on kicks. The ends are rather slow and do not play hard enough. The tackles fail to make good holes, but are running well with the ball. The centre men, with the exception of Hoague, are rather light for their positions. The backs play a fast...
