What's even sadder is the talent wasted. Director Tom Shadyac's other films (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective; The Nutty Professor; Liar Liar) are bright, off-kilter farces; scripter Steve Oedekerk wrote Professor. It is a crime against humority that they and Williams (who in a chair next to Letterman is still our most brilliant word surrealist) renounce the work they've practiced with such abandon and invention for Patch's bullying sentimentality. Comics who want to do Hamlet often end up, as here, serving big, sticky slices...
...Wong Foo (whose unpunctuated title means...oh, nothing very much) has its larkish side, when the male stars are doing their struts and their dish. But it soon goes sappily didactic. Director Beeban Kidron and scripter Douglas Carter Beane want you to believe that the drag queen, because he is at ease with his ersatz sexuality, is a true liberator: he can teach feminism to women and manners to men, in this awful place called Middle America. The movie has its own fantasy credo: that heterosexuals are the real objects of pity and scorn. And gay men? Poor them...
...RIFF-RAFF, a rambling comedy from director Ken Loach. Stevie (Robert Carlyle), an ex-con finding construction work in London, falls in love with a pretty girleen (Emer McCourt) who wants to be a saloon singer. If this sounds like the plot of The Crying Game, don't blame scripter Bill Jesse; Riff-Raff was made a year before Neil Jordan's gender bender. Loach's film is a hymn to blue-collar, multiracial mateyness, and you needn't plow through the thickly accented dialogue (subtitled for American ears) to guess his social agenda.
