Johnson was backed by persons believing in his honesty, simplicity, pertinacity. Backers of Schall made a butt of Johnson's notorious difficulties of speech and leisurely mental processes. Republican buttons appeared: "The joke has gone far enough"; "Schall is blind,* but Magnus is dumb"; and Schall's affliction was said to be gaining him both sympathy and curiosity.
