HORNETS' NEST is a weird little war movie full of bizarre energy and merciless violence, a kind of Dirty Dozen Reach Puberty. The plot has to do with a group of Italian war orphans who capture a downed American paratrooper (Rock Hudson) and enlist his aid in wreaking bloody revenge on the Nazi occupation forces. There is one sardonic sequence where he teaches the kids to shoot machine guns and another, quite brutal, where they all joyously massacre a town full of Nazis. Director Phil Karlson's fadeout is hopelessly sentimental, and there is a subplot about...
...base enlisted men's club, which used to be an edgy center of booze-and boredom-bred friction, is a joyful and jumping place, with dim lights, rock music and girls. Every Wednesday night is "soul night," on which some 500 sailors, 80% of them black, dance to the music of the Exquisite Diatonics and treat their dates to 40¢ drinks. Cartoonist Goldberg achieved fame for a series of wildly complicated inventions that today can be seen as a prediction of the world's foundering in technology. Goldberg's contraptions used owls and trumpets to nominate people for political office, pistols and crows to feed an infant and rock its cradle. There was even a Hitler-kicking machine that gave the Führer his comeuppance via a cat, a mouse and a stripteaser. Goldberg constructed chains of causality that could be as illogical as life itself. A 1950 cartoon: "Truman (A) plays piano, knocking over bowl containing Amerasia...
...bottom of the dirt road that leads up from the highway south of Anchorage to the Davidson homestead, there is a sign that reads "Please, no shooting..." At the top of the road, up near the rock buttresses of peaks that overlook a broad arm of Cook Inlet to a mountain range on the other side, Art lives with his wife Mairiis and his two sons, Arlyn and Dylan...
