Midst all the grandeur and panoply Pakistan's Ayub had a case to sell to the President: the Kashmir question. General Ayub tried to convince the President that India's Nehru must consent to the reopening of negotiations on the disputed land. After all, Pakistan is a U.S. ally while India is neutralist, ran the argument, so Pakistan deserves U.S. support. Ike listened carefully but was noncommittal...

...question in everyone's mind was what President Garcia would do. Lewin's friends in high places had saved him before. But Garcia was still smarting from last month's election defeat (TIME, Nov. 23), in which charges of corruption figured heavily. Would Lewin get off, or would he be deported to show how untrue all the charges of scandal in government were? Awaiting a hearing next week, Lewin sat in his penthouse and complained, "I'm just the little guy being persecuted...

The Fighting Cock concerns a retired general disgusted by a world he finds filled with "cheats" and lost to honor. He would like to stir up a movement to get rid of the "maggots." Against this testy idealist rooted in the past, Anouilh sets a number of figures who accept...

Professors Elliott and Leach have presented a most interesting approach to the honorary degree problem and one that may well be applied to other vexatious question. When, for example, Radcliffe put an end to the CRIMSON's Miss Radcliffe contest, the editors might have instituted an annual competition among noted beauties of the past. The Williams professor and I may disagree on who immortalized the Dark Lady of the Sonnets, but we would, I am sure, agree that disputation about her beauty would have been more becoming than was the Kampus Kutle Kontest that agitated Plympton St. last year...
