Shoemaker's seat is now being contested on the ground that his prison term lost him his citizenship. In 1930 a St. Paul judge gave him a suspended sentence for mailing a letter to a banker addressed "robber of orphans and widows." Shoemaker roundly criticized judge & sentence in his newspaper The Organized Farmer. The judge sent him to Leavenworth Penitentiary for contempt of court.
