Sergio Cardinal Pignedoli, 70, one of the Roman Catholic Church's leading diplomats, who visited 105 countries as a Vatican envoy and was a strong candidate for the papacy after the deaths in 1978 of Pope Paul VI and his short-lived successor, John Paul I; of a blood clot of the lungs; during a visit to his home town of Reggio Emilia.
