Unfortunately, that is about all that A Tale Told does make clear. Talley's Folly was a slight but charming romance, a one-act waltz for two characters. Fifth of July, which is still running on Broadway, is the hilarious but moving story of the Talleys today, with Kenneth, the inheritor of that big house, coming to terms with the fact that he left both legs behind in Viet Nam. ...Lincoln Center huge banners fluttered from the balcony of the New York State Theater: NEW YORK CITY OPERA-WHERE OPERA COMES ALIVE. And so it did last week, as the City company presented new works by U.S. composers. ...surprise of the evening is Von Heute auf Morgen (From Today Until To morrow), a one-act comic opera being given its U.S. stage premiere. Schoenberg had consolidated his epochal twelve-tone system by 1923, supplanting the traditional seven-note scale with all twelve chromatic tones, which, in various intricate arrangements, became a new basis for melody and harmony. Von Heute, composed in 1929, qualifies as the first twelve-tone opera.
