...Baig and his friends are the new icons of Kashmiri hostility toward the Indian state. The stone throwers are often photographed in action, yet little is known about them. On a recent afternoon, however, I actually met several. There was Amir, a reedy 17-year-old who sneaks out to the protests without telling his parents; Asif, a muscular 24-year-old rickshaw driver; and Muddasar, 20, with soft blue eyes and a dark red bullet wound in his left shin. Their de facto leader is Imran Zargar, 24, who spent 11/2 years in jail after one ugly clash...
...Dominique Galouzeau de Villepin could not be more different. Tall, elegant, and ostentatiously erudite, Villepin was a career diplomat who gained the Matignon without ever having run for office. Short, petulant and sparking with excessive energy, Sarkozy marched to the Elysée Palace by winning an election, using old-fashioned political grunt work and his Cabinet posts to establish a reputation for delivering results. Along the way, the two men's conflicting styles and rival aspirations turned them into bitter enemies. "Some follow the tradition of élitist French politicians and leaders like Villepin, who honor philosophy, literature and oratorical skill, and regard intellectual performance as the primary political tool," says Rozès. "Others, like Sarkozy, are distrustful of that cliquish, insider atmosphere, and define and construct themselves by action, pragmatism, doing things." (See pictures of Paris expanding...
...starting to be understood. Nothing captures that collapse better than the video on YouTube that shows the shocking condition of the building that once housed Detroit's famous Cass Technical High School. Cass Tech meant a lot to me and other graduates for the opportunities it gave us. The old building, abandoned for a newer facility, was a war zone - a ruin of overturned desks, textbooks, TVs and equipment that could have been packed up and reused. If any public-school leaders had cared, and clearly they didn't, they would have treated the place better. Isaac T. Graves, RICHMOND...
