...CHINA: "In my time we took great care never to offend China until the Chinese actually started to crucify us. And when they did start to crucify us, well, I'm no Jesus Christ, and I didn't have to turn the other cheek." On his final visit to Peking, in 1959, Khrushchev tried vainly to get Mao Tse-tung's permission to build a radio in China that would reach Soviet submarines. Mao's reply: "No! We don't want you here. We've had foreigners on our territory for years...

...stand up. Now he has. Instead of making his speech as he usually does, without text or even notes, he says: "I wrote this speech myself, nine drafts of it. This wasn't a product of the public relations department. It was pure Haack. I knew it would offend some members, but I felt strongly." However, the towering stone nave serves as a vast echo chamber to bounce and distort every sound the singers and instruments make. This concert was the first step in an attempt to break away from Sanders and experiment with other halls. With any luck, the other halls will be better than this...

...Jewish mother (Lillian Adams) who chides her son the doctor about the expensive "opticals" on his "fancy-schmancy" Plymouth is bound to offend every Jewish mother from Barbra Streisand to Golda Meir. Winston's "What do you want, good grammar or good taste?" campaign verges on sadism. But then, unless R.J. Reynolds can prove between now and Jan. 1 that cigarette smoking may not be hazardous to your health, all cigarette ads will be off the air. Except for the vignettes showing Benson & Hedges' longer cigarettes forever getting caught in beards, clashing cymbals and elevator doors, none...
