Commissioned in June 1991, the show was written, rehearsed and opened by September at the Drury Lane Oakbrook Theater in suburban Chicago. This version, which imagines that the Phantom is the brother of Christine's ordinary beau Raoul, stresses the spectacle and italicizes the sexuality.
