...Yogi & the Commissar. Andrei Gromyko is an almost perfect neo-paleolithic specimen. When the Communist Party hacked its bloody way to power in 1917, Gromyko was eight years old. He, like millions with him and after him, never had a toy, a dream, a book or an ideal that was not somehow tinged by the penetrating hue of Communist dogma. That such men exist, that they occupy positions of power is one of the most important facts in today's world. Gromyko does not belong in the category of the commissars of the 1920s, who were far more imaginative...
There was a great-event atmosphere around the neo-Gothic Palace of Westminster. Londoners and provincial visitors gathered with tense faces around Parliament Square. Britons, to whom queueing has become second nature, waited in a long line for the few public seats available in the House of Commons' gallery...
High point of the debate came when aged (87) ex-Premier Orlando charged the Government with "a lust for servitude," thus throwing the sweltering chamber into screaming uproar. Meanwhile, Neo-Fascist Emilio Patrissi and Deputy Paolo Treves, a Saragattian Socialist, after a fistfight in the corridor, scheduled a duel the next day. Said Premier Alcide de Gasperi: "What counts most is that Italy gives a clear, honest and unreserved demonstration to walk the path of sacrifice toward a new dignity...
...neo-Gothic transept, Sculptor Henry Moore's outsize figure of the Madonna & Child sat tranquil and serene. At the other hung Painter Graham Sutherland's agonized Christ on the Cross, bearing the sins and degradation of the world. Between them, in the center aisle, stood full-throated Soprano Kirsten Flagstad, singing Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner. The audience, warned not to applaud in the church, sat in pent-up enthusiasm which mounted from song to song, until at last, when Flagstad made her final bow, some 20 of her listeners jumped to their feet and silently bowed...
Gielgud's direction of "Love for Love" keeps the thing moving fast, and never lets the general spirit of good-humor escape. The settings, especially that of a neo-classic drawing room (with adjoining bedrooms) are as authentic as they are waggish. The play is going to be in town only a few more days. If there is plenty of time it might be a good idea to read it before going, but inability to do that should keep no one away...
