Carpet knotting was introduced to India in the 15th century. The weaver's art took root and quickly spread through the subcontinent. Masterpieces from Indian looms decorated the palaces of Mughal emperors but remained obscure to the West until the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London.
