While we criticised the last number of the Lampoon as exceptional in its general interest, the current issue is by no means worthy of such praise. We have criticised some numbers as being of sectional interest rather than of general. The present number tries to cater to general demand, but fails of its own weakness. While we are glad to see the Lampoon broadening in its views we regret that it is unable to attain a uniform standard...
...Lampoon which comes out this evening is of such general interest that it is rather an exceptional number. As is only natural Lampy is apt to get into a rut and find it difficult to cater to the demands of the college public. Taken as a whole, however, the present issue is eminently successful. There is one drawback. Take-offs on college professors form part of the Lampoon's ordinary stock in trade, are usually harmless, and often true to life. The take-off in the present number is not wholly of this description and might well be suppressed...

The centre page, which is also devoted to the game, is clever but somewhat careless...
...forth-coming number of the Lampoon is on the whole above the standard. Since the '98 board came in, the paper has shown a most laudable tendency to strive for genuine wit rather than to depend upon puns. The present number is a good example of the success of this. Many of the pieces are excellent, and the one headed "Lampy's Bureau of Heraldry" is as good as anything the paper has done for a long time. Another thing to be praised about the number is that it is got to press unencumbered by any illustrated love offerings...
