...most original work in the last number of the Lampoon is found in the drawings. The illustration on the front page, though simple, is yet cleverly done and has the advantage of being well set off by some very appropriate rhymes. Equally good, but in a different way, is the centre-page drawing, which indeed is vivid enough to give the most confirmed grind a start. Singularly clear and simple in quality, the humor of the Lampoon is so carefully annotated that it can be enjoyed by any child of ordinary attainments. The joke on the front page, for example, is good, but no one must be allowed to miss it; therefore we find a line of italics clamoring for attention. All danger of losing the point is in this way cleverly avoided. On the following page, too, there is a naive little aside, which informs the reader that he must not attempt to see through the appended joke. The caution seems needless, though the merit...
