...good nature more than makes up for it. Visually antic and full of belly laughs (a rarity this season), Malcolm is cartoonish in the best sense of the word, yet it doesn't deny any of its characters humanity, even (rarer still) the parents. It's now rote to knock TV and real-life families as morally bankrupt, and when shown to the press last year, the pilot was wrongly lumped with the fall's genuine network sleaze for its mild (and funny) scenes of parental nudity. But Malcolm is a testament to the virtues of an imperfect home; Malcolm...

...general at the fore, killing him with one swift stab in the chest. Shot with the camera speeding alongside the galloping horses, this first scene promises a magnificent cinematic experience, something both visually and emotionally powerful (if bloody). What follows, however, falls disappointingly short of expectations. Though a cinematographic knock-out (kudos to director of photography Zhao Fei), this epic rendering fails to lend vibrancy to the story of the first emperor of China's rise to power. President Clinton on Thursday was called back to the West Virginia meeting to knock heads together, after Syrian delegates warned that talks could not proceed without discussion on the future borders between the two states. The current talks are premised on the principle that long-term peace will involve Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights in exchange for cast-iron security guarantees and normalization...

...training, as it is the one skill that makes a soldier truly useful. Some of us were already good at it; the rest had to learn that it was more art than science. Get comfortable. Aim straight. Stop breathing. Squeeze the trigger, gently. Targets pop up? You knock 'em down. Simple as that, and damn satisfying...

...what may be the easiest way to burn off calories: chewing gum. Chomping for an hour on a big wad (half a pack, sugarless) raises the metabolic rate 19% and burns 11 extra calories. That may not sound like much, but researchers calculate that chewing every waking hour can knock off 10 lbs. a year. The experiment illustrates that even the most trivial increase in activity can affect weight. Another example: strolling at a snail's pace (1 m.p.h.) doubles metabolic rate and burns 62 calories an hour. Better still, try walking and chewing gum at the same time...
