Though he sometimes seems about as Irish as chopped chicken liver and onion on rye, Matthau is full of baleful Gaelic braggadocio as Captain Boyle. As Joxer, Lemmon is as spry and cunning as a soiled city sparrow, and for once, Maureen Stapleton acts from her heart rather than her frazzled nerve ends. Let loud praise for all be heard, for it is much merited...
...good gruff job on what emerges as a thoroughly nasty character, but Miss Booth, in what should be a congenial role, seems almost uncomfortable; her famous infectious warm-heartedness is unaccountably missing, as well as her knack for pleasant semi-singing. Jack MacGrowran, as the Captain's fairweather sycophant, Joxer Daly, makes a pleasant if repetitive performance out of his slight build, weasly face, and nimble-stepping cringe. The other roles are taken mostly by singers and dancers whose acting appears to stem more from necessity than inclination...
...Juno, has in her voice all the ache and sorrow of Cathleen Ni Houlihan; Seamus Kavanagh makes his Captain a lovable buffoon for most of three acts and - at the right moment - turns him into a villain; Cyril Cusack whines and wheedles his way magnificently into the role of Joxer Daly...
