...boost its 4,000,000 kw. capacity (enough to light 7,000,000 homes for a year) by 65% in the next five years, the most ambitious five-year expansion ever tackled by a private U.S. utility. The program will give AGE more generating capacity than all the hydro capacity built by TVA in its 23 years. The outlook was so good that AGE last week recommended a 3-for-2 stock split. The company thus hoped to widen ownership of its stock and make it easier to finance its expansion program...
Died. Robert Hood Saunders, 51, lawyer, onetime (1945-48) mayor of Toronto, chairman of the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario; of injuries suffered in a private-plane crash near London...
Similarly, natural resources and public works policies ought to be carefully scrutinized. The "partnership" philosophy in the development of hydro-electric power is certainly open to question, and some of the restrictions on private exploitation of public resources seem to be in great danger. At face value, the President's proposed $101 billion highway construction program seems commendable, but it is far less so if it results in curtailed federal aid for hospital and school construction. The nation already has an adequate highway net; but it does not have ample mental hospital facilities...
Less happy was a second Convair-Navy demonstration. As observers watched, Test Pilot Charles E. Richbourg taxied the experimental XF2-YI Sea Dart (TIME, Feb. 16, 1953) across San Diego Bay on its retractable "hydro-skis." The jet seaplane took off, circled the bay, screamed in for a 400-m.p.h. pass at the shore. Suddenly, 300 ft. above the water, the Sea Dart fell apart in a gush of flame and a shower of metal fragments. Pilot Richbourg lived only two minutes after rescuers pulled him from...
...powerful boner when it reports that the St. Lawrence power project, when completed in 1959, "will generate more power than TVA." The 12.6 billion kilowatt-hours per year estimated for the St. Lawrence project compares with over 16.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electric power produced by TVA hydro plants in fiscal year 1950, TVA's peak year of hydro generation...
