Last spring, a young couple from New Orleans flew into New York City with twin boys who were already seven months old. Andrew Hoffmann and his pretty blonde wife thought both boys were blind, but at Presbyterian Hospital it was found that Dennis had some vision. On Kenneth, who had none, an ophthalmologist operated to remove part of the fibrous tissue. He believed that it was not the retina, but that the retina was shriveled and displaced. By last week, Dennis Hoffmann's vision was-improving slowly, but Kenneth was still sightless...
...recent paper the Owenses warn: "Vitamin E supplements are of no value if not started...before the baby is six weeks of age, since by that time irreversible retinal changes have occurred." Thus in the case of the Hoffmann twins, it apparently was several months too late for vitamin E treatment when the babies were brought to New York. At Johns Hopkins, every baby under three pounds now gets alpha tocopherol when a week old, and until it passes the 5½-pound mark...
Writing in the current Scientific Monthly, Drs. C. H. Hoffmann of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and J P Linuska of the Fish & Wildlife Service deftly spray this "childlike faith in what nature will provide" with mental DDT. Their conclusion is that the real DDT if used with reasonable care, need have no ill effects on desirable wildlife...

As little as one-tenth of a pound of DDT per acre is effective against some mosquitoes. Many serious forest pests, such as gypsy moths, are controlled by somewhat larger doses. Other insects are killed at the same time, but in most cases the insect population of the forest returns to normal a few weeks after the spraying...

If used incorrectly, they concede that it can cause major trouble Heavy doses (5 lbs. or more per acre) might poison birds and small mammals and cause insect "irruptions." Aphids (plant lice) sometimes multiply disastrously when too much DDT has killed too many of their natural. enemies. But careful observations made all over the U.S. show that moderate spraying with DDT has little or no effect on birds, reptiles or mammals-and successfully gets rid of the pests...
