...couplings are at center stage in this still sprightly tale: the long since abandoned marriage of a woman (Uta Hagen) who is fervently modern and a man (Stefan Gierasch) who is scrupulously conformist, and the flirtation between this couple's virginal daughter (Lise Hilboldt) and an amiable young dentist (Victor Garber) who is a seasoned rake and frank fortune hunter. In less imaginative hands, the play would end with the younger man's reforming and the older couple's rediscovering the first fine flush of passion. Shaw indulges no such false hopes. Reporters Tara Weingarten and Lise Hilboldt filled in details of DreamWorks' film and TV plans. And bureau chief Bonfante sounded out tough-minded observers who could subject the company's projections to a skeptical view...
Alda's rather dry and distant directorial style does not help. And as a writer he has not provided for himself as generously as he has for others. His romance with a teacher played by Lise Hilboldt, an actress whose plainness of manner amounts to a kind of self-cancellation, is dully conventional. And a subplot that involves them in an endlessly unfunny attempt to soothe the troubled spirit of Burgess's mad old mom is irrelevant and near to tasteless. She is played by Lillian Gish, and the movies' oldest pro clearly understands that she is trapped in Sweet...

When the Stepdaughter (Lise Hilboldt) and the Father (Robert Stattel) see "real" actors imitating the gestures and words they had used in moments of true passion, they initially cannot recognize themselves. When they do, they greet the realization with both laughter and despair. Mirrors and lighting (designed by Michael Yeargan and Jennifer Tipton, respectively) make such scenes visually exciting and intellectually stimulating...
