George Caldwell is not much of a hero, but once aboard the Silver Streak, a sleek train bound from Los Angeles to Chicago, he finds heroism thrust upon him. George (Gene Wilder) is the kind of guy who has his hands full even when he's not carrying anything, so he is hardly equal to the challenge. Say this for him though: he is a dogged fellow, and his blithering persistence manages to keep the villains tellingly off balance...
...PLAY lacks the direction tht would have made it progress steadily up to the grand tragedy of the last act. Since her character is not developed from the beginning, Bessie Burgess' heroism seems to come from nowhere. Her death fails to be convincingly tragic. And in Nora's madness there are heard none of the Ophelian overtones that O'Casey's lines can convey: what appears onstage is little more than hysteria...
...western, where spacious landscapes and historical distance seem to soften the impact of his brutal methods of problem solving, Eastwood is not simply a symbol of the modern taste for random and gratuitous bloodletting in films. Rather, he reminds us of a traditional American style of screen heroism-a moral man slow to rile but wonderfully skilled when he must finally enforce his conception of right and wrong.
