Fresh evidence suggesting that the beat of the heart is initiated by radioactive elements in the blood was reported by Professor Charles Christian Lieb of Columbia (pharmacologist) from the researches of Dr. Hendrik Zwaardemaker, professor emeritus of physiology at the University of Utrecht, Holland. Professor Zwaardemaker took the hearts out of eels and frogs, pumped through them physiological salt solutions. The hearts beat in vitro half an hour or so, then ceased.
